College-Wise – Words of Wisdom

What is it that has millions of people across the nation joining fraternities and sororities?  I ask myself this exact same question when I first came to Mankato and I could not find an answer.  So, as most college students do, I went on my way having fun and going to class.  However, sometime around winter break I began to meet different members of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity on campus.  They seemed to be everywhere: volunteering at the non-profit Campus Kitchen where I worked, running my pre-engineering learning community, and even in my classes.  So when I was offered the chat to participate in a Guitar Hero tournament in January I jumped at the chance.  I haven’t looked back since.

It has been a whirlwind of four years, but several important ideas have really shown themselves to stand out amongst the rest.

Don’t trip yourself up.  This idea applies to everything.  From girls to classes, everyone has preconceived notions about what’s going to happen without actually going out to happen.   I did this with fraternities and I have seen many do the exact same.

Get involved.  Someone smart once said don’t let good enough be good enough.  Why should getting drunk and trying to go to class be your college experience?  Go out and do something extra.  I promise that it won’t be a decision that you ever regret.

Never regret.  This applies not only to college years but for life.  Never let an opportunity pass you by.  Some day you will look back and wonder what if.  Its best to have as few of these instances as possible.  Take that chance.  Step outside your comfort zone.  You won’t regret it.
